Yarns and their varieties

Hello beautiful people, how you all doing?

I have got so much busy these days so I couldn’t update this post early.. Sorry for the late guys. Many of you have messaged me personally and asked me about yarns. Some requested to post about their varieties. So this post is all about yarns, yarns and only yarns.

Last post I mentioned about crochet hooks and their types. You can check out here. Ok, lets come to our today's post.

How many of you have struggled buying/choosing a yarn in India especially in Tamil Nadu? If you said yes, let’s do a high-five. Do you know that there are so many varieties and sizes in yarn categories?. I struggled a lot at first before 4 years, all i can say that when i saw YouTube tutorials or search for a crochet projects in google, i find many varieties of yarns. I don’t know where to get those type yarns or how to get from such faraway places those days.

The days I was more into these crochetings I found more and more prettier yarns available in the market. I used to tell the people who comes from abroad to buy yarns for me. In that way I came to explore many types and sizes of yarns from Dubai, Singapore, Colombo, Malaysia. Ofcourse the rates of those types of yarns are higher compared to Indian Rupee. But those were the days I was so much addicted to crochet and I bought yarns like crazy.

As there are many sizes of crochet hooks, yarns also vary in sizes according to crochet hook sizes. Mostly in higher quality yarns like Red heart, Bernat etc., you can find the hook sizes mentioned there for that yarn. Sometimes you can find a free crochet pattern inside it too. I mentioned it on my youtube video, you can check out here.

1.Types:

There are many types of yarns available, wool, alpaca, rayon, cotton, silk, acrylic, nylon, tshirt yarns, fun yarns etc..

Wool yarns:

Woolen yarns are made from sheep as we all knew. They are warmer and used widely for cooler climates. The higher the wool quantity in a yarn, the rates also higher. Alpaca yarns – these are similar to woolen yarns but they are more warmer than the sheep wool. As name suggests Alpaca yarns are made from Alpaca and they are the most costliest yarns of all types.

Acrylic yarns:

You can find these most commonly in all the shops. Acrylic yarns are the cheapest yarns and they are easily available. The 10rs. Yarns available in our places (Tamil Nadu) are 100% Acrylic. But they are of very low quality.

Cotton yarns:

These are very thin and thread yarns. Mostly used for doilies, laces etc.., These are very suitable for summer wear also.

T-shirt yarns:

As name suggests these yarns are made from tshirt cloth. There are many DIYs of how to make t-shirt yarns from old t-shirts. You can search on google or youtube aswell. These are stretchy type yarns and gives neat finishing to your projects.

Fun yarns/ Fur yarns:

These yarns are available in many varieties and designs and types. These are mostly used for extra touch to the projects. They are mostly used for embellishments.. It gives more fun look to your projects.

Plarns:

Plastic+yarns= Plarns. These are made from left over plastic bags. You can also make this easily at home. Check out the DIYs on youtube or google.

2.Sizes of yarns:

We have seen types of yarns, apart from that there are so many varieties available in the market. What I mentioned above are the basic types of yarns used for crochet and knit. Now lets look upon the sizes of yarns. As I already mentioned above yarns come in many sizes like crochet hooks/ knitting needles. We have to find the perfect match for it. Sometimes yarns package comes with instruction of the perfect hook size for it.

Below is the table for yarns and sizes and how they are named worldwide according to their sizes.

* GUIDELINES ONLY: The above reflect the most commonly used gauges and needle or hook sizes for specific yarn categories.
** Lace weight yarns are usually knitted or crocheted on larger needles and hooks to create lacy, openwork patterns. Accordingly, a gauge range is difficult to determine. Always follow the gauge stated in your pattern.
*** Steel crochet hooks are sized differently from regular hooks—the higher the number, the smaller the hook, which is the reverse of regular hook sizing

These classifications are often mentioned in imported yarns like Red heart, Bernat, etc.. Whereas in indian yarns these types are not mentioned, its really difficult to find a correct size of yarns.. All I do is experiment with hooks. In some yarns where you can find a PLY count mentioned there instead of aran, worsted weight or bulky etc., Lets look upon that,

Ply Yarns:

Ply, plied, or folded, yarns are composed of two or more single yarns twisted together. Two-ply yarn, for example, is composed of two single strands; three-ply yarn is composed of three single strands. In making ply yarns from spun strands, the individual strands are usually each twisted in one direction and are then combined and twisted in the opposite direction. In some yarn package you can find 1 ply, 2 ply…, 8 ply and so on, These represents the twists of single stranded yarns, the more the plies the more thicker the yarns will be.

Indian yarns:

Now in Indian market we can find many varieties of yarns in many types and sizes. Some yarn names you can get here are, Vardhman, Oswal, Ganga, Anchor cotton thread, NAKO, Ice yarns,  etc.., Some of the famous Indian Yarn online stores where you can get quality yarns right at your doorstep are mentioned below,

For Tamil Nadu I can suggest the best online sites are Ponycraftsstore and Pradhanembroiderystores. These two are my recent favorites to buy yarns and they are super friendly.

Yarns for Indian climate:

Hot country like India its always difficult to find the correct yarns for projects. In winter days you can choose wool/acrylic type yarns to keep yourself warm. During other days its best to fit upon thread yarns, wherein sometimes you can choose acrylic also depends on your body temperature and places. In kashmir, Ooty, Shimla like  hill places 100%wool or alpaca yarns are best suited to keep yourself warmer.
